Some more information on Bone Scans
Please let the Radiographers/Technitians if you could
be pregnant. We don't like exposing unborn foetuses to Radiation.
However....pregnant women can still sometimes have Lung scans
to detect blood clots on the Lung, these patients are usually in hospital.
Breast feeding mothers may need to stop for some hours after the
scan. We will advise you as to how long. Please make other arrangements
for feeding if necessary. This is because the radioactive tracer comes out
in breast milk.
Please let the department know if you are going
to be late, because the timing of the scans is important.
Allow plenty of time for parking - it is difficult to park in some
hospitals (definately at ours!)
After the scan you may continue as normal, you will be slightly radioactive
for 24 hours.
Patients should avoid prolonged close contact
with babies and pregnant women after their scan.
The resulting scan will look something like the image on the left. As you
can see, the bladder is already quite full, so it's important to go to the toilet before your scan.
